A Smart DIY Cabinet Lets You Store Lawn Mowers Out of Sight

Digilifetrends Published 4 min read

Gas and electric push mowers can make yard work easier, but they also create a storage problem because of their size and weight. When garage or shed space is limited, the mower can take up valuable room. TikTok creator bossanovaworkshop shared a clever solution: a custom, extendable platform that lets a push mower slide under a workbench and stay hidden. The design uses heavy-duty cabinet glides, a hinged ramp, and a magnet-secured front panel to keep the whole setup out of view while freeing up floor space.

It is important to note that the video shows a mower and spare gas tank stored in the cabinet, but gas-powered tools and fuel should be kept only in approved containers in cool, ventilated areas that are separate from the house and away from heat or spark sources. That includes electrical charging batteries and power tools. The mower should also be allowed to cool completely before being put away. Safety should come first before attempting a project like this.

The exact measurements will depend on your mower and the space available, but the concept should work for most push mowers with a folding or collapsible handle. Measure the mower while it is folded so you know the minimum interior space needed for the cabinet, along with the platform height if you are modifying an existing workbench or building one from scratch. Once you have those dimensions, you can gather the materials needed to build a mower storage cabinet tailored to your garage or shed.

Planning the platform and choosing materials

Start with a sheet of 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch plywood for the platform base. The thinner option is easier to handle, while the thicker sheet is better suited for supporting heavier loads. Electric push mowers typically weigh 30 to 60 pounds, while gas models are more often in the 60 to 100 pound range, with self-propelled versions often landing at the higher end. Checking your mower's weight will help determine which plywood thickness is best.

If you plan to use heavy-duty side-mounted cabinet glides to pull the platform out from under the workbench, make sure they are rated for the combined weight of the mower and platform. Options such as REGUDA Heavy Duty Drawer Slides come in multiple lengths and can support 250 or 500 pounds depending on the model. Glides may limit how far the platform extends compared with casters, but they can offer smoother movement and easier control.

Casters are another option if you want the platform to roll more freely. In that case, choose a heavy-duty swivel caster set that can easily support the mower and plywood base, such as the YUPEZOP 4-Inch Heavy Duty Industrial Caster Wheels rated for 2,400 pounds and sold for $26 on Amazon. If you are working within a fixed height under an existing workbench, remember to account for the extra clearance needed for the plywood and casters so everything fits properly.

To build the platform, use your measurements, the size of the workbench footprint, and any glide clearance requirements to cut the plywood to the proper width and depth. At the same time, cut another plywood piece about 18 inches wide and the same depth as the platform to serve as the hinged ramp for rolling the mower on and off. For extra support, build a 2-by-4 frame under the platform where the cabinet glides will attach, and use heavy-duty corner brackets or cross supports to keep the structure square and sturdy. If you choose casters instead of glides, apron sides are optional, though they can make the finished piece look more polished and help conceal the wheels.

Attach the ramp to one side of the platform with a pair of butt hinges so it can fold up when not in use. If you are using glides, mount them to the sides of both the workbench and the platform box, then install them according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you are using casters, secure them to the underside of the plywood near each corner.

To finish the project, measure the front opening of the workbench and cut a plywood panel that fully hides the mower platform. You can use paintable or stainable plywood if you want it to match nearby cabinets or wall color. Add two handles to the front for easy lifting, and hold the panel in place with heavy-duty magnets mounted on the workbench apron and aligned with matching spots on the back of the panel.
