In a Reddit discussion in the r/retirement community, a 59-year-old woman said she was unsure about moving again after retirement. Her husband wanted to move to a more affordable beach community, ideally in Florida, but she was reluctant to leave their current home without knowing whether they would truly like living somewhere new. Other Reddit users suggested a lower-risk option before making a final decision.

Consider Renting Before You Buy

Instead of committing immediately, one option is to rent in the area for several months or longer.

Many Reddit users backed that approach. One proposed spending about six months in a few different communities while keeping the current home. Another recommended renting a vacation home for a few months to get a better sense of the area.

Some users also shared their own experiences. One person said they rented for five years before choosing where to settle and were glad they waited because their first choice turned out not to be the right fit.

AARP also advises spending an extended period in a possible retirement destination rather than relying on a short trip. That way, retirees can experience daily life there without buying a home first.

Why a Trial Stay Can Help

A temporary stay does require money, but it is usually far less expensive than buying in a new place and later discovering it is not the right fit.

It also gives you a chance to live like a resident. You can explore neighborhoods, meet people, learn about the community and discover what you do and do not like.

For example, a beach town may look ideal for retirement, but living there might reveal issues you had not considered, such as heavy tourist traffic, severe weather or limited access to healthcare.

AARP also notes that retirees moving to a lower-cost area can still face surprise expenses, including higher insurance premiums, property taxes and healthcare costs.

What to Watch for During a Trial Stay

Before making a permanent move, there are several points worth evaluating during a trial stay.

1. Cost of Living

Factor in housing costs, property taxes, homeowners insurance and utilities. Several Reddit users warned that places such as Florida can be pricier than expected, especially when it comes to insurance and home upkeep.

2. Healthcare Access

Some commenters said access to medical care should be a priority. Check the availability of nearby hospitals, doctors and specialists.

3. Weather

Conditions can vary widely by season. One Reddit user who has lived in Florida for 50 years suggested renting for a month in August and another in February to experience both the summer heat and the busier winter season.

4. Lifestyle and Amenities

Look at the local pace of life and nearby amenities to see whether the area offers what you want.

5. Family and Friends

Think about how far you would be from children, grandchildren and friends. Reddit users emphasized the importance of staying close to family, with some noting retirees who moved back to be near grandchildren.

6. Community

Spend time in different neighborhoods and talk with residents. One Reddit user said finding the right community is a key part of retirement.
