A $3,000 tankless water heater quote leads to a broader savings debate

A first-time homeowner facing a broken water heater may be able to lower energy costs by choosing a heat pump model that uses less power to produce hot water.

In one Reddit discussion, however, the decision was more immediate: replace an 8-year-old tank after a basement flood, or spend much more upfront for a tankless system.

What happened

After a seller-provided home warranty ran out, the homeowner said on Reddit that their 8-year-old 50-gallon water heater had rusted through and flooded the basement. A plumber quoted a Bradford White power-vent replacement at $1,450 for the unit, $1,200 for installation, and $180 for a maintenance plan.

The tankless option came in far higher, with the same plumber estimating at least $3,000 for installation. That turned the discussion from basic purchase price to whether the bigger upfront cost would pay off over time.

Commenters disagreed on the best choice. One wrote, "Do yourself a favor and go with the tank heater if you want uninterrupted hot water." Another said the power-vent price was "actually a decent price" and that $1,200 for installation was "within the acceptable range."

Other details raised

Much of the back-and-forth focused on service needs and how long each option lasts. One commenter argued that annual maintenance on a tankless unit could erase any efficiency gains. Another pushed back, saying, "Power vents average age are 5-8 years (you are on borrowed time). Tankless with proper maintenance is 15-23 years if you water quality is fair and not too hard."

Installation needs were also debated. One commenter said tankless systems may require gas-line sizing checks, venting changes, or other upgrades, while another said many homes do not need gas-line updates.

What homeowners should consider

The clearest lesson from the thread was to compare total pricing instead of looking only at the equipment itself.

One commenter said their company installs a tankless unit for about $4,600 "out the door," and the original poster replied that the figure was "right around the costs of the tankless heaters I'm seeing + his labor to install."

Several users also recommended getting multiple estimates, since labor rates, venting setup, and gas capacity can all affect the final bill. Even with disagreement over tank versus tankless, most commenters viewed the quoted prices as reasonable.

Another option for homeowners comparing replacements is Cala, which makes smart heat pump water heaters. Cala says its customizable models can help reduce energy bills by heating water only when it is needed. For buyers looking beyond the choice between a gas tank and a tankless system, it offers a third path to consider.

The homeowner seemed to care more about long-term value than the initial price tag.

"Great point that even if I'm looking at a higher upfront cost, it'll still be a good value if im getting 15-23 years vs 5-8 years," they said.
