6 Easy Ways to Enjoy Chia Seeds, Per Dietitians

Digilifetrends Updated 2026-10-27 4 min read

If you have a bag of chia seeds sitting in your pantry and aren’t sure what to do with it, there are plenty of simple options. Adding them to overnight oats or blending them into a smoothie brings in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and minerals such as calcium and magnesium, registered dietitian Brittany Brown, RD, told HEALTH. Here are six straightforward ways to use them in meals and snacks.

1. Turn Them Into Pudding

Chia pudding jars are a convenient grab-and-go choice for hectic mornings, Kristen Carli, MS, RD, owner of Camelback Nutrition & Wellness and an outreach expert for WOWMD, told HEALTH.

If you make chia pudding with a dairy base, it can also deliver an extra calcium boost that supports bone health, added Jenny Finke, MS, RDN, metabolic health dietitian and owner of The Metabolic Dietitian.

To prepare it, mix two tablespoons of chia seeds into ½ to ¾ cup of your preferred milk or yogurt. Let it sit in the refrigerator overnight, and by morning it will have turned into a smooth, gel-like pudding. Finish it with chopped fruit, nuts, seeds, or a spoonful of nut butter for more flavor and nutrition.

2. Stir Them Into Jam

Chia seeds are a great addition to homemade jam, not only because of their nutrition, but also because of the texture they create in the finished spread.

Brown suggests combining a generous spoonful of chia seeds with crushed berries and, if desired, a little natural sweetener to make a high-fiber jam rich in vitamin C and plant polyphenols. You can also try it with other fruits you like.

“It thickens beautifully and makes a wholesome, low (or no) sugar-added spread that everyone in my family enjoys,” Carli said. This homemade condiment works well on baked goods, oatmeal, yogurt, or simply spread on toast.

3. Add Them to a Yogurt Parfait

Another easy option is to add chia seeds to a parfait made with Greek or regular yogurt, fresh fruit, and granola.

“This stacks the beneficial fiber and healthy fats from the chia seeds while also providing an excellent source of high-quality protein and calcium from the Greek yogurt,” Finke told HEALTH. “The addition of berries provides polyphenols from their vibrant colors for an anti-inflammatory benefit.”

4. Blend Them Into Smoothies

Chia seeds also work well in smoothies. They add a lot of nutrition and help thicken the drink by soaking up liquid and forming a gel. Best of all, their flavor is barely noticeable.

Finke recommends blending 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with fruit, ice, 1 to 2 tablespoons of nut butter, a handful of spinach, protein powder, and 1 cup of your preferred liquid.

“This smoothie is my go-to recommendation for my clients who have less than two minutes in the morning for prepping but want a filling and nourishing breakfast that they can sip on during their commute or at the office,” she added.

5. Mix Them Into Overnight Oats

For another easy, nutrient-rich breakfast, try stirring chia seeds into overnight oats. The seeds add texture and boost the already substantial fiber in oats, helping with fullness and blood sugar control, Brown said.

To make it, combine ½ cup of rolled oats, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, and ¾ cup of your favorite milk. In the morning, stir in fruit, yogurt, and, if you want, a bit of sweetener.

6. Sprinkle Them Over Savory Foods

You do not have to hydrate chia seeds before using them; you can also sprinkle them dry over almost any dish, including savory ones.

“Blend chia with dried herbs, garlic, and onion flakes for a crunchy, nutrient-dense sprinkle that will elevate your salads, grain bowls, or even avocado toast,” Brown suggested.

Roasted vegetables, eggs, toasted nuts, and noodle dishes can also benefit from this flavorful nutrition boost.

“I call this the superfood topper, as it not only adds a mouth-watering crunch and elevates a standard homemade meal, but it makes eating vegetables so much more interesting,” Finke added.
