Sometimes the simplest option is the best one, and that is true of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

I often suggest the Venture Rewards to newcomers who want a travel rewards card that is easy to use and easy to optimize.

That is largely because, for a $95 annual fee, the card earns at least 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, so you do not need to track bonus categories to build a solid balance. It also includes useful travel benefits and flexible redemption choices, whether you prefer to keep things straightforward or try more advanced strategies later.

If you are new to travel rewards or have just started using the card, here are six simple ways to make the most of Venture Rewards.

Put the welcome offer toward your next trip

For beginners, one of the easiest ways to jump-start a points and miles balance is by earning the welcome bonus.

New Venture Rewards cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months after opening the account. They also receive a $300 Capital One Travel credit for hotel and vacation rental bookings upon account opening.

Using TPG's October 2026 valuations, Capital One miles are worth 1.85 cents each. With the added credit, the total value of this offer comes to $1,688, making it the most valuable one seen in more than two years.

Those 75,000 miles give new cardholders a strong starting point.

The $300 Capital One Travel credit can also help you get comfortable with booking through a travel portal. It could reduce the cost of a weekend hotel stay, a vacation rental or even part of a pricier trip.

Keep in mind that the credit must be used for eligible hotel or vacation rental bookings through Capital One Travel within the first cardholder year.

Use everyday spending to earn miles

One of the strongest features of Venture Rewards is that it earns at least 2 miles per dollar on every purchase.

Some travel cards reward certain everyday categories more generously, but this card keeps things simple: whether you are buying gas, furnishing a new apartment or grocery shopping, you still earn 2 miles per dollar.

It also earns 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

TPG lead writer Katie Genter has carried Venture Rewards for more than 10 years and still likes it for routine spending: “I like the Venture's straightforward earning structure and the fact that it earns versatile yet valuable Capital One miles.”

She often turns to the card for purchases that would earn only 1 point or mile per dollar on another rewards card.

For someone new to points and miles, the card is an easy place to begin because the rewards are simple to earn and can later be turned into travel.

Book through Capital One Travel for extra miles

Another beginner-friendly way to boost your return is to book eligible travel through Capital One Travel, the issuer's online booking platform.

As noted above, Venture Rewards earns 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through the portal, rather than the standard 2 miles per dollar on other purchases.

For instance, a $1,000 hotel stay booked through Capital One Travel would earn 5,000 miles instead of 2,000 miles if booked directly with the hotel. That is 3,000 extra miles, worth about $56 based on TPG's valuations.

Cardholders can also access Capital One's Lifestyle Collection, which can include benefits such as a $50 experience credit for eligible hotel stays and possible room upgrades when available.

That said, I would not use the portal for every booking by default. Third-party bookings often do not earn hotel loyalty points or qualify for elite benefits, so it is worth comparing prices and perks before reserving.

Even so, for beginners who want to earn more miles without changing how they spend, Capital One Travel can be a helpful tool.

Make use of the card's travel perks and protections

Beyond earning miles, Venture Rewards comes with travel benefits that can save money and make trips easier.

One of the most valuable is a statement credit of up to $120 every four years for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. To get it, simply pay the fee with your card and receive a statement credit for the eligible charge.

Both programs can speed up airport screening, though Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck privileges, making it the better choice for international travelers.

Another useful perk for international trips is that the card has no foreign transaction fees, so you can use it abroad without paying extra charges on purchases made outside the U.S.

It also includes travel protections such as auto rental collision damage waiver and travel accident insurance, which can provide added peace of mind away from home.

In addition, you can enroll in complimentary Hertz Five Star status, which may provide access to a broader selection of vehicles and, at certain locations, the ability to skip the rental counter.

For a card with a $95 annual fee, those benefits can be a strong source of ongoing value, especially for people who travel several times a year.

Use miles to offset travel purchases

If you are not ready to transfer miles to travel partners but still want to use rewards for trips, another option is to cover eligible travel purchases with your miles.

Instead of searching for award seats or dealing with airline loyalty programs, you can make an eligible travel purchase with the card and then redeem miles to erase the charge within 90 days.

When redeemed this way, each mile is worth 1 cent. That is below TPG's 1.85-cent valuation for Capital One miles, but it is an easy and flexible redemption method.

For example, if you charge a $300 flight to your Venture Rewards, you can use 30,000 miles to cover that purchase. The same feature also works for other eligible travel expenses, including hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars.

TPG director of site strategy Carly Helfand has used this approach before, redeeming 100,000 Capital One miles to cover a last-minute Airbnb charge.

While transfers to partners can sometimes provide greater value, covering travel charges is a useful fallback when you want to book directly or cannot find award space that fits your plans.

Transfer miles to partners for stronger value

For potentially better redemptions, consider sending your Capital One miles to the issuer's airline and hotel partners.

If you are new to travel rewards, transferring miles simply means moving them into another loyalty program, where they can be redeemed for flights or hotel stays.

Capital One has more than 15 travel partners, including Air France-KLM Flying Blue, British Airways Club and Wyndham Rewards.

Most airline partners use a 1:1 transfer ratio, which means 1,000 Capital One miles become 1,000 partner miles. Some partners use different ratios, so it is important to check before moving points.

Personally, I like transferring Capital One miles to airline partners for flights to and within Europe.

For example, I recently moved about 6,000 Capital One miles to Air France-KLM Flying Blue to book a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). I paid just $11 in taxes and fees for a flight that would have cost about $450 in cash, which came out to 7.3 cents per mile in value, far above TPG's 1.85-cent estimate.

If you are just starting out, do not feel pressured to master transfer partners immediately. You can begin by redeeming miles for travel purchases and explore transfers once you feel more comfortable.

Bottom line

The Capital One Venture Rewards is a strong fit for beginners because of its simple earning structure, useful travel perks and flexible redemption options.

If you are new to points and miles, start by using the card for everyday spending and trying basic travel redemptions. As you gain experience, transferring miles to travel partners can help you unlock even more value.

Even for more seasoned points and miles users, the Venture Rewards remains a card worth keeping thanks to its simplicity and flexibility.
