As the years pass, taking care of health from the inside out becomes more important. No supplement can halt aging or promise a longer life, but some nutrients may help support cell function, brain health, energy production, and skin elasticity over time. With so many anti-aging products making bold claims, it can be hard to know which options are worth attention.
Neuroscientist Robert Love points to three supplements that may help support healthy aging: NMN, CoQ10, and collagen peptides. From promoting DNA repair and mitochondrial health to supporting bones, muscles, and skin appearance, here’s a look at each one, what the evidence suggests, and why talking with a doctor first matters.
1. NMN
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, is often discussed as an anti-aging supplement because it may help increase levels of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) in the body. NAD+ is an important molecule involved in energy production, DNA repair, and mitochondrial function, and those processes tend to decline with age.
Robert Love says, “NMN is a precursor to NAD. NAD is an energy source used throughout your body. NAD also helps repair DNA or fuels the repair of DNA. So, by taking NMN, this helps fuel the repair of DNA, and that can slow down and even reverse aging or symptoms of aging.”
He recommends choosing products that have been third-party tested.
2. CoQ10
Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is an antioxidant that plays a major role in energy production and cellular health, which is why it is often discussed as a helpful anti-aging supplement. Natural CoQ10 levels fall as we age, potentially contributing to fatigue, reduced heart function, and higher oxidative stress, all of which are linked to aging.
“The research on CoQ10 shows you need about a thousand milligrams a day to really get the anti-aging benefits for your brain. It helps with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, [according to] double-blind, placebo-controlled studies,” he notes.
“You need to basically do 5 to 10 times what’s on the bottle,” he adds, while stressing that it is important to check with a medical doctor before making any decision. Based on research, he says 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams can be “very powerful for reversing aging in the brain and improving mitochondrial health throughout your body.”
3. Collagen peptides
Collagen is the main protein that helps maintain skin elasticity, hydration, and firmness, so collagen peptide supplements may help soften wrinkles, improve skin texture, and support a younger-looking appearance. “Collagen peptides are really, really helpful for your skin and joints. Women who take collagen peptides have stronger bones and stronger muscles.”
What to Keep in Mind
Before adding any anti-aging supplement to your routine, remember that more is not always better. Supplements can interact with medications, cause side effects, and may not be suitable for everyone.
Dosage and product quality also matter, so it is best to look for third-party-tested products and ask a healthcare provider what is safe and appropriate for your individual needs.
