When a Threads user asked healthcare workers to share “harmless” symptoms that can point to serious medical problems, people had plenty to say. Here are 19 of the most useful responses:
1. “Bleeding after menopause is a major red flag and can be a sign of uterine cancer.”
2. “A cough that lasts longer than a month makes me pause. I’ve seen chronic coughs turn out to be lymphoma when a mass was irritating the lungs. It can also be asthma, reflux, or a medication reaction.”

3. “Flashes, new floaters, webs, or curtains in your vision should always lead to an immediate call to your eye doctor. Don’t take chances with your eyesight.”
“I had a corneal ulcer. In just a few hours, I went from feeling like something was in my eye to being in severe pain and needing urgent care. I came very close to permanent vision loss, and that may have been different if I hadn’t gotten to a major hospital with an ophthalmologist on call.”
4. “Pregnant patients with headaches that won’t go away are a serious concern, especially Black patients who are often dismissed. If you feel okay except for that headache, come in right away. It could be an early sign of preeclampsia.”

5. “A child who suddenly starts wetting the bed, is too tired to play, is extremely thirsty, and is losing weight may be showing signs of type 1 diabetes. That needs prompt attention.”
6. “If your stool consistently comes out pencil-shaped, get checked. It can be a sign of colorectal cancer, with a tumor partially blocking the bowel.”

7. “A strong feeling that something is wrong, or a sense of doom, can be the body picking up on a problem before it shows clearly. There is usually a reason for it.”
“I had a patient who gave birth and described that unshakable bad feeling. After a C-section, her pain became severe, her heart rate and blood pressure kept dropping, and before the end of my shift she was back in the operating room with liters of blood clots removed from her abdomen and multiple transfusions.”
8. “An itchy breast can be important. As a breast cancer survivor and nurse, I try to teach people about lesser-known symptoms of breast cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer is aggressive, and signs can include dimpling, redness, changes in nipple size or shape, orange-peel texture, and discharge. I found my own stage 1 cancer because I noticed a dimple and followed up, and I never felt a lump.”

9. “A headache that wakes you up is a warning sign. I know this personally because I have hydrocephalus, and that has often meant my shunt is malfunctioning. In medical school, I once saw a patient with headaches that woke them at night, recommended a head CT, and they had a brain tumor.”
*A shunt is a device surgically placed to drain and redirect excess brain and spinal fluid.
10. “If you have diabetes and a wound on your foot, see a doctor. Even if it seems small, get it checked. I see too many amputations caused by necrosis in diabetic patients.”

11. “Women who report persistent indigestion and a vague feeling that something is off should be evaluated. After open-heart surgery, I monitor patients for heart attacks, and women often do not have the classic crushing chest pain. They may describe heartburn, fatigue, or just feeling strange.”
“Women’s heart attack symptoms can resemble menstrual cramps, which is one reason they are not always taken seriously. We live with discomfort so often that it can be easy to overlook.”
12. “Unexplained weight gain can also be a cancer symptom, even though it is often brushed off.”
—@bradfordjenn
13. “In a stroke unit, we often saw older patients whose families brought them in after a few minutes of dizziness, headache, or confusion. They insisted they were fine, but it turned out to be a stroke or a TIA that could have led to one.”
14. “Sleep problems are often treated with sleep aids without anyone investigating the cause. I can’t count how many people say they sleep but never feel rested, or that nothing works, and they’ve never had a sleep study. When they finally get referred, it’s usually sleep apnea, restless legs, or another sleep disorder.”
—@catieeelizabeth
15. “In early pregnancy, a sharp, sickening pain that eases quickly or shifts to another part of the body, such as the shoulder, can be a warning sign. Once a fallopian tube ruptures, the pain may stop, even though internal bleeding continues. Ectopic pregnancies are extremely serious.”
16. “Bloating is something I always want people to have looked at. As a clinical microbiome and gut health specialist, I often see unexplained bloating, and it can point to anything from indigestion to insulin resistance to colorectal cancer. It falls across a wide range of conditions.”
—@hrishikeshdeshpande_
17. “When an older person suddenly becomes aggressive or angry for no clear reason, I want a UTI test done quickly. In elderly patients, UTIs can cause delirium without obvious urinary symptoms, and it may look like sudden dementia.”
“Sudden confusion in an otherwise stable elderly person? Check the urine. UTIs can do some unusual things in older adults.”
18. “As a hygienist, I know bleeding gums can signal gum disease. Long-term gum disease and chronic inflammation in the mouth are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, lung disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.”
—@4green_jen
19. “Persistent hiccups can point to a neurological problem, a heart attack, or an esophageal rupture. Adults should not be getting hiccups frequently or for long stretches.”
