Here are 12 classic rock bands that still tour or record with only one original member left.
Plenty of groups that started in the 1960s and 1970s are still active, but keeping a band together for decades almost always means lineup changes. Creative differences, departures and deaths have left many long-running acts with only a single founding member.
For this list, “original” refers to the earliest documented members of a band’s foundation, not necessarily the first lineup to find success. And while “classic rock” can be used loosely, this rundown sticks to bands that formed in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
12 Classic Rock Bands With Only 1 Original Member Left
Below are 12 classic rock acts from that era that remain active with just one original member still in the group.

Scorpions
Original Member: Rudolf Schenker
Scorpions became commercially successful in the late 1970s, but the band dates back to 1965, when Rudolf Schenker formed it with guitarist Karl-Heinz Vollmer, drummer Wolfgang Dziony and bassist Achim Kirchhoff. The other early members stayed only a few years.
Since Klaus Meine joined in 1969, the group has gone through many lineup changes, with Matthias Jabs becoming the third-longest-tenured member.

Deep Purple
Original Member: Ian Paice
Deep Purple have had at least 14 documented official members since forming in 1968, plus numerous live players. Drummer Ian Paice is the only original member still in the band.
Longtime members Roger Glover and Ian Gillan both joined in 1969, after the band’s first three releases: Shades of Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn and Deep Purple.

Foghat
Original Member: Roger Earl
Foghat’s drummer Roger Earl is the only original member left, much like Deep Purple’s Ian Paice. The band issued 12 studio albums during its first run, took a long break from the mid-1980s to the 1990s, then reunited in 1993 with original members Dave Peverett, Rod Price and Tony Stevens alongside Earl.

Price left in 1999, Peverett died in 2000 and Stevens departed in 2005, leaving Earl as the last classic-era member.

Jethro Tull
Original Member: Ian Anderson
Jethro Tull also appears on lists of classic prog rock bands with only one original member, and it fits here as well. Vocalist and bandleader Ian Anderson is the lone founding member still in the lineup.
More than 25 musicians have been documented in the band since Anderson formed it in 1967 with Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker. Those three were gone by 1972. Other major long-serving players included guitarist Martin Barre, who spent 44 years with the group, and drummer Doanne Perry, who stayed for 28 years.

Uriah Heep
Original Member: Mick Box
Uriah Heep grew out of Spice, which itself grew from guitarist Mick Box’s earlier band Hogwash. When the group became Uriah Heep in 1969, the lineup included vocalist David Garrick (David Byron), bassist Paul Newton and drummer Alex Napier, along with Box. Keyboardist Ken Hensley joined the next year.
After a series of early changes, especially among bassists and drummers, Hensley and Byron were also gone by 1980. Box has been the only classic member since then, while singer Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon joined in 1986 and remain in the band.

Nazareth
Original Member: Pete Agnew
Nazareth has been relatively stable over the years, but bassist Pete Agnew is the only founding member still present. Drummer Darrell Sweet stayed from the beginning until his death in 1999, and vocalist Dan McCafferty stopped touring in 2013 because of health problems.
The band has seen a handful of guitarists come and go, though Jimmy Murrison has been part of the lineup since 1994.

AC/DC
Original Member: Angus Young
For a long time, AC/DC’s only founding members were brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, until Malcolm died in 2017. The band’s first singer, Dave Evans, lasted about a year, and Bon Scott died in 1980. Brian Johnson has been a constant presence ever since, except for a temporary break from touring in 2016, when Axl Rose filled in.
Cliff Williams was the next-longest-serving member after joining in 1977, but he retired from touring in 2024.

Eagles
Original Member: Don Henley
Don Henley co-founded the Eagles with Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon in 1971. Henley and Frey were the only two who stayed consistently, aside from the band’s 14-year breakup. Frey died in 2016, leaving Henley as the last original member, while Joe Walsh has been with the band since 1975.

ZZ Top
Original Member: Billy Gibbons
ZZ Top had one of rock’s most stable lineups, with Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard together for more than five decades until Hill died in 2021 and Beard died in 2026.
Even so, Gibbons was the only true founding member throughout that long run, since he originally formed the band with Lanier Greig and Dan Mitchell before Beard and Hill joined later.

Journey
Original Member: Neal Schon
Neal Schon has been the one constant in Journey since the band formed. He is now joined by other long-serving members Jonathan Cain, who came aboard in 1980, and Deen Castronovo, who joined in 1998.
Journey’s original roster also included Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, George Tickner and Prairie Prince, all of whom moved on years ago. Current singer Arnel Pineda has now been with the group longer than Steve Perry was.

Boston
Original Member: Tom Scholz
Boston’s lineup was unusually stable during its first few decades. Four of the five original members — Tom Scholz, Brad Delp, Barry Goudreau and Fran Sheehan — stayed together from 1976 through 1981. Original drummer Jim Masdea was the exception and was replaced early by Sib Hashian.
Goudreau was fired in 1980, then Sheehan and Hashian left in 1983, leaving Scholz and Delp as the last classic members until Delp’s death in 2007.

Guns N' Roses (Sort Of)
Original Member: Axl Rose
This one depends on whether fans define the band’s true origin by its earliest lineup or by the Appetite for Destruction era. In the earliest version, Guns N’ Roses included Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Tracii Guns, Ole Beich and Rob Gardner, which would make Rose the only original member left today.
Beich’s time in the band was brief, and he was replaced by Duff McKagan, who stayed until 1997 and returned in 2016. If the Appetite lineup is treated as the true original, then Rose is not the only founding member left because McKagan and Slash are back in the band. Since it’s debatable, the band still makes the list.

Andy Biersack is the only member still present from Black Veil Brides’ first lineup. They remain in the band today alongside bassist Lonny Eagleton.

Erik Rutan is the driving force behind Florida death metal act Hate Eternal, which formed in 1997. Since original drummer Tim Yeung left in 2000, the band has used a rotating cast of musicians. Travis Shinn
Megadeth (Dave Mustaine)
Megadeth’s history has been marked by many lineup changes since 1983, but for years the core was Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, aside from Ellefson’s 2004 to 2010 absence. As of 2021, Mustaine is the only original member left after Ellefson’s departure that May.

Ministry (Al Jourgensen)
Al Jourgensen has been the creative center of Ministry since he launched the project in 1981 as a synth-based new wave act. The early lineups faded by 1986, just before the group broke through in metal.

Pedro the Lion (David Bazan)
Pedro the Lion has always revolved around singer-songwriter David Bazan. When he revived the band in 2017, guitarist Erik Walters and drummer Sean Lane joined as a trio with Bazan handling bass.

Queens of the Stone Age (Josh Homme)
Josh Homme is the only original member left in Queens of the Stone Age. Early bassist Nick Oliveri left in 2004, and drummer Alfredo Hernandez departed in 1999. The band was formed in 1996 as a vehicle for Homme’s songwriting.

Soul Asylum (Dave Pirner)
Dave Pirner is the last original member of Soul Asylum. Founding bassist Karl Mueller died in 2005, and founding guitarist Dan Murphy left the Minneapolis band in 2012.

Tooth & Nail Records
Starflyer 59 (Jason Martin)
Starflyer 59 began in Southern California in the early 1990s as a heavy shoegaze project from Jason Martin and bassist Andrew Larson. The Beach Boys (Mike Love)
The Beach Boys briefly reunited with surviving classic members, including Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, in 2012. The Shins (James Mercer)
James Mercer is the longest-running member of The Shins, besides bassist Yuuki Matthews, who joined in 2011. Venom (Conrad 'Cronos' Lant)
Venom solidified its identity around lead singer and bassist Conrad “Cronos” Lant in 1979, after he joined the band formerly known as Guillotine. He has led the proto-black metal pioneers creatively for decades and remains the only original member today.

W.A.S.P. (Blackie Lawless)
Blackie Lawless is the lone original member of W.A.S.P. He formed the band in 1982 with musicians from his earlier group, Circus Circus, and everyone in the current lineup joined in the 1990s or later. The photo shows original guitarist Randy Piper, Lawless, guitarist Chris Holmes and original drummer Tony Richards in 1985.

Whitesnake (David Coverdale)
It makes sense that David Coverdale is the only original member left in Whitesnake, since the band was created as a vehicle for his vocals after he left Deep Purple. Today, aside from longtime drummer Tommy Aldridge, the rest of the lineup joined in the 2000s or later.
